Apply For A Canadian Study Visa From Nigeria

Studying abroad is a privilege. It opens up many opportunities, and if you choose to study in Canada it is no exception. There are even immigration programs for foreigners who graduate from Canadian post-secondary institutions to help you obtain permanent residency. In this way, if you complete your education in Canada, they don’t want you to leave. They want you to stay and put the skills and knowledge you have acquired to good use to strengthen their economy and create a comfortable and happy life for yourself. In fact, Canada is so enthusiastic about Nigerians applying to study in their beautiful country that they recently launched the Nigerian Student Express pilot (NSE)!

Under this pilot, Nigerian applicants who are accepted to one of the study institutions will receive an incredibly fast turnaround time for their applications. Applications for study permits will be processed in as little as 20 days.

The first step is to be accepted to a Canadian post-secondary institution. Next, you will need to apply for a study permit. However, you must meet several criteria to qualify for a study permit. So, without further ado, here’s how to apply for a Canadian study visa from Nigeria.

Get Accepted To A Canadian Institution

It is important to remember that the academic year in Canada runs from August to June and this will affect the time needed to apply. It is vital that you apply at least a year in advance. This is because universities and other post-secondary institutions have their own processing times before you are granted the relevant processing time for your study permit. Schools usually have a list of requirements, in addition to the academic ones, that prospective international students must meet. Your school will provide you with a list, which may include the following.

  • Cost of applying and tuition fees;
  • Health insurance for the duration of your studies. As you are not a permanent resident during your period of study, you will not have access to Canada’s free public health system;
  • Proof you can meet the cost of living requirements such as rent etc; and
  • Language proficiency. You may be required to take one of the Canadian Language Benchmark tests, depending on your field and level of study.

Complete the applications and submit them to your schools of choice. If you are admitted as a student you will receive an acceptance letter. You will use this to apply for your Study Permit.

Getting Your Canadian Study Permit

The Nigerian Student Express (NSE) pilot program is for students who have been enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a particular institution. If you are enrolled in another course, such as a degree program, you are still eligible, you just have to be patient and endure a longer application period of about 8 weeks.

NFB Eligibility Requirements

  • have an acceptance letter from a designated institution;
  • prove you have paid your first year’s tuition;
  • you must be living outside of Canada when you apply;
